CMPort's Colombo Port (CICT) surpasses 2 million TEUs milestone in 2016

 

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has reported a throughput of 2 million TEUs for the 12 months ending 31st December 2016, achieving impressive YoY growth of 28% in volume, once again set a record of history.

 

In order to celebrate its volume throughput surpasses 2 million TEUs, CICT arranged a simple celebration ceremony,the deputy general manager of CMPort Mr. Hang Tian attended the ceremony. Mr. Liu Yunshu, the chief representative of CICT on behalf of China Merchants Group (CMG)、CMPort overseas operation officer as well as CICT's CEO,was thankful to the joint effort of all staffs who has over completed the company's target.

 

Liu Yunshu emphasized: "CICT has overcome many difficulties such as market downturn in 2016, open up new routes constantly, while maintaining the industry's leading level of operational efficiency at the same time. Nevertheless, the future shipping market environment is still under pressure, it is necessary to continuously improve the level of customer service, as well as to maintain a healthy growth momentum."

 

Thanks to the strategic leadership and best practical duplication from China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited (CMPort), as well as its advantages in global port network, together with the combined effort of all staffs, this new volume has enabled the Port of Colombo to register overall incremental growth in the three consecutive years since CICT came into operation.

 

CICT is the only port in South Asia that is capable of handling 18000 TEUs volume vessels, these very and ultra large container carriers had contributed 70% of the volumes CICT achieved in 2016.

 

Making use if CMPort's global port network as well as its geographical location and excellent deepwater bay condition, CICT made continuous achievements since its first operation. With 0.68 million TEUs in its first 6 months of operation in 2014, and 1.56 million TEUs in its full year of operation in 2015, achieving an impressive YoY growth of 127.5% in volume, enhancing the overall volume of Colombo port to achieve its historical record of 5million TEUs. In year 2016, the volume growth of Colombo port increased by 11% YoY, making it the new star amongst ports in the South-Asia region.
